Our main project is Steriwell
Project Steriwell The focus of this project is on the sterilization of animals from informal settlements and townships (including Bloekombos and Goliath Estate in Kraaifontein). Mass spay days are held when funds allow and individual animals are also sterilized on a weekly basis. The average cost to sterilize a township animal is R300 per dog and R250 per cat. Cats and Dogs sterilized so far: 2009-2014: 1076 2015: 209 |

STERILISING SAVES LIVES
This poor girl from Bloekombos was almost another RIP... her owners are back-yard breeders and sell her babies. She went into labour Tuesday. 3 of the 5 pups she gave birth to died. On Wed afternoon it was suspected she still had unborn puppies inside her :( on Thursday morning nearly 48 hours later Lindie was FINALLY able to convince the owner this dog needed help and URGENTLY. She was taken to Dr Roos in Stellenbosch and despite efforts to induce her labour she still didnt give birth. Dr Roos then performed a life-saving c-section. The one puppy (dead) was obstructing her bladder, preventing her from peeing – she would have died because her bladder would have burst. In total she had 10 puppies. 7 died. 3 are still alive. For how long we dont know as the owner refuses our help.... we suspect she wants them to be used for breeding as they get older.... so we sterilised and save this poor animals life only for the cycle to continue with her offspring? This is the reality/hardship we face everyday...

STEVIE WONDER
Stevie was rescued from Eersterivier in 2011 during an African Tails mass spay day. We were signing up animals on the day before the spay day when this skinny, dirty “kitten” ran across the road. His ears were covered in scabs from sunburn and his hair was so short it looked like it had been shaven. Angie called him and he came running up to her, but nobody could tell her who he belonged to, he was “just there”.
We eventually found the lady who was “looking after him” about 30 houses down the road. His owners had deserted him. She said she would keep on looking after him, if we had him sterilized. But the next day when we took him back, we heard that he would have to stay outside and would not be allowed inside the house with the lady’s cat. We could not leave him there to fend for himself, and on top of that a white cat under the African sun! So we took him in.
When the vet examined him she found that he was actually fully grown. He was the size of a 5month old kitten and weighed only 1.3kg. By the time he was adopted he weighed over 4kg!
